I’ve heard great things about Lightlark before deciding to read it & IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT !!!  I love the storyline & how it unfolded — revealing even greater secrets, betrayals and love triangles as soon as you think you know everything that’s happening. 

I love the premise of this storyline — it’s not outrightly fantasy like Vampires and Werewolves; which can be quite smutty. This was just the right touch, about wielding power drawn from nature! 

People compare this to Hunger Games most times, but I believe it to be quite different; only the games element and the love triangle I guess would be the similarities. It’s a lot less on the killing, more about uncovering the secrets and etching a plan to lift the curse; but the plans overlap and complicate other plans because of the secrets. And finding out more secrets as you go further along the book — that’s the exciting part that makes you keep going!

I thought that even though Isla’s age wasn’t precisely defined, and perhaps she was legally an adult, having her love interest literally centuries older than her felt icky.  Also, the curses endured by the various kingdoms were not at all in proportion to each other.  One kingdom simply loses the ability to fly, while another one must regularly eat human hearts in order to survive, and will die if they fall in love.  I find it almost impossible to imagine a society where people exist on eating human hearts.  Even if a person only eats one a month, it means twelve other people have to die every single year of that person’s life.  It just doesn’t feel sustainable.  Yes, it’s fiction, but I can’t suspend my disbelief quite that far.

This book is really good! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great leap into the fantasy genre for me as I don't read much fantasy. However there was far more romance than I expected. The main couple is great and there is LGBT themes running through the book. There is a little smut but it's not very Graphic and easy to skip.
