Really enjoyed the plot, characters, lore, etc. Has lots of unanswered questions and mysteries that I’m sure will be relevant in the following books. Would love to know more about Nezha and Jiang’s relationship with Altan.
Did not love the writing style… The way the vernacular speech was written was not convincing and often distracted me. IMO, “She Who Became the Sun” by Shelley Parker-Chan did a much better take on Chinese vernacular speech through English dialogue. The writing is also really simple and does a lot of telling of events through character dialogue rather than showing what may have happened. Despite this, the plot is really really interesting and I would love to continue this series!

Amazing debut novel. Almost historical fiction in a grimdark world N.K. Jemisin could have written. Know the content warnings before reading though.
Graphic: Rape, Medical trauma, Genocide, War, Violence, Self harm, Fire/Fire injury, Eating disorder, Drug use, Child abuse, Blood, Death, Addiction, and Physical abuse
