That was sick af.

Tau once again proves himself to be vengeful and driven character that you can’t help but like, hate, feel for, and cling to. His character, along with every other, feels so well written that it boggles my mind. Each person has their own attitudes and depths without anything ever feeling overwhelming or forced, and it’s such a nice refreshing breath of air to read a fantasy book that is not a “mix of this book and this book with this trope and that trope.” Fires of vengeance is original, brave, and a wonderful gut wrenching I’m-gonna-go-lay-in-the-dark-and-question-life story that you cannot help but love.

Being able to see Tau’s further character development as he goes from being terrifying to a literal monster is such a crazy display. Some scenes had me cringing, while others had me laughing or crying. Each element of the story never felt forgotten or left behind, though in the next book I would love to see some more interactions with Tau and the commoners/drudge’s like he had briefly before. I think discussing this tier based style of life on the downward side of things could be really interesting, as we only get to really see Tau and his close knit group as the lessers, and everyone else is noble or of higher status.

I love the soft transition from Tau’s love interest as well, as Tau griefs Zuri’s loss but finds new love with the queen. It feels appropriate and well paced, and it was threaded through the story beautifully.

All the while other scenes were just insane. His family’s murder? The description had me verbally disgusted it was so good. Tau removing the war lords head, Tau beating Odilly (I listened to the audio book so forgive me for spelling things incorrectly) was a cool conclusion, and I loved the duel POV going on with the queens sister that really put the reader into a different perspective for a bit. Creating sympathy so quickly for someone who also is a b word is such an amazing skill to have as a writer.

The ending had me gagged, and I’m super excited to listen to the audio book for book 3.

Rest in peace to Evan Winters father. What a beautiful dedication for a book to have.

Tbh my opinions on the sequel are mostly the same as the debut. This is an incredibly solid series that carries great characters, world-building, and plot with so much personality. What I appreciated even more in this book is the new characters that were introduced (I mean Winter had to after killing so many so often

Great continuation of the series. Tau was placed in a lot of new and different situations in this one, and it was interesting to see how he navigated them. This book, like the last, did a great job of keeping things moving forward at all times, and it felt like there was never a dull moment.

The worlds of Uhmlaba and Isihogo are so unique interesting and there's still so much left to learn about them, so I absolutely cannot wait for book 3 to come.
