An excellent read, if somewhat slow pacing and cumbersome from the size of it. If this wasn't 1200 pages I would have said this is a medium paced book, but even being a fast reader it felt like I was crawling through.

The book has many ideas, probably too many which bog it down some. But, the world building is intriguing, so if that's something you enjoy then that should be enough to carry through. There's a small cast of characters to follow, though it doesn't make it feel less the epic for it. Most of these are characters you feel invested in, though unfortunately the one woman POV you follow throughout the book is the weakest of them all and I found myself losing interest in her chapters.

The writing is passable, which is what I have come to expect from B-Sandy. However, if you read through this fast enough you might get sick of seeing the word 'grimace'.

i cried, i laughed and i fell deeply in love with these characters
(except you. shallan. you know why.)
. once again i find myself so impressed with the natural progression of sanderson's books. i love how he takes his time with the characters he writes, time to tell you their stories and their thoughts so that, when the time comes, you understand why they make certain choices. you see their progress and you come to root for them, to hope for a better resolution to their stories. and by the last pages when everything gets absolutely fucked, you feel like you're a part of the story yourself. plainly, it's fucking incredible. i can't wait to read the next book in the series. i loved it.

I loved this book. Some POVs felt a bit boring until it got to the end, but one POV in particular has me speeding through it. That one POV was 5 stars for me, because it made me feel so many things. I'd give it 4.5 overall. I got through it way faster than I thought I would.

I saw someone on Reddit describe this book as a 1,000-page prologue, and it seems a fair assessment to me. It was an increeedibly long read, and at times I really wished the book could have been paired down to only the primary characters in the Shattered Plains. But having finished it, seen that amazing ending and now having the full groundwork laid out for what we’re actually doing in this series, I can see how every perspective and description was necessary, and I do love all of the characters at play. I am very excited to read the rest of the series (after a break, lol).
