An original and enjoyable story. I listened to this as an audiobook and appreciated the rich descriptions. The characters were balanced between believable and fantastical which suited the tone of the book. There were a number of things that I wish were explained at the end of the story and there is almost no explanation of the magic system, but overall this is an engaging and creative book.

I love this book, and I love the way she writes, so whimsical and touching. This was a re-read and the impression I got this time was that the characters were free in a way that in most stories they are not. They exist outside of the story we are told, most books you follow along their every move and are presented with their every thought, but Erin Morgenstern has a wonderful way of writing so that the story is not confined to the page.
