One of the best poetry collection I've read this year. I love the way Desiree C. Bailey blends the political and the personal. Overall, the writing was just beautiful. There's a spiritual aspect (Caribbean folklore) that took the collection to a whole new level and I love the idea of spirituality as a form of resistance. While I enjoy the collection as a whole, the first section (told from the pov of an enslaved young women during the onset of the Haitian Revolution) stood out to me. That first part alone gives off the vibes of a historical novel in verse which I find fascinating.

Beautiful, devastating, deep and rich. I needed to read each stanza multiple times to absorb as much as possible and to turn each word, image, in my mind. Descriptions of womanhood and grasping at our mothers' and grandmothers' culture when being part of a diaspora really connected with me. The tragedy and violence of enslavement and anti-Black racism and murder, and the continued vein of perseverance, rebellion, and defiance are strong emotions throughout each poem. I highly recommend this volume.
