This is one of those books that I wouldn't recommend to a general reader.

I study the eighteenth century as a grad student, so I don't mind the language and found it an interesting take on women's issues through the lens of the first revival. The fact that it was written by a woman is a deviance from the norm in this period. If you are NOT historically interested in the period, and/or if you do not frequently read text from that time, you probably won't like this and will find it really boring.

If you are interested in an eighteenth century novel, but want something more accessible, I would recommend Pamela by Samuel Richardson or a book by Henry Fielding (I really like his iconic take on Pamela, Joseph Andrews, as well as his classic novel Tom Jones).

Read for ‘The Queer 18th C’ masters class @ University of Edinburgh. Thought it was going to be a feminist utopia but actually found it to be highly problematic :(

I liked the concept. I tried to keep my perspective about when it was written, but it didn't help my opinion of it. The language was heavy, not in a use of big words way, but in it's feeling. There were some lovely passages, but most of it was a drag. The thing is, I can't lay that on the time period itself because I've read other books from the era that were more enjoyable. This was a lot like listening to a sermon - Maybe not a Catholic sermon, more like a Protestant one, but probably not a very liberal one.

DNF!

I've given up. I honestly haven't even thought about the book in 2 months, and I know what happens at the end. Nothing eventful is supposed to happen in the rest of the book, and it was hard enough getting through the first part.
I think I read between 1/2-2/3 of the book. I'm done XD
