It’s been a while since I’ve read such an engaging non fiction book. I mostly only read queer non fiction and it’s sometimes hard for me to actually get the historical context because I’m not from the United States. And I think this book does a really great job at giving you all the context needed in a comprehensible way that illustrates the before and after. It also really inspired me in the fact that I also want to work capturing queer stories, queer lives, from our past but also the present. So the people who are living today can be remembered years from now. I cannot wait for Hugh Ryan to write more, this book is truly an inspiration.

While this book had a lot of interesting information and historical fact it also was written with an agenda.  This books sometimes feels overwhelming in its desire to get the author's personal agenda across and causes it to be a very stilted read.

This book is like a new gut punch every single paragraph. Hugh Ryan has become one of my favorite authors through this and his other book, When Brooklyn was Queer. I am so grateful to him for sharing the story of the women and trans masc people whose history has been forgotten and purposefully erased.

While this book is heavy, it is also compelling and easy to read. Highly recommend, even to people who don't enjoy non-fiction.

This book is super important, well researched, and well written. My only issue was the constant time jumps which made it a little confusing.
