I absolutely adore this series! I think it's one of the most unique original UF series out there. (The Others and Downside Ghosts, probably the two most original, imo.) I've said it before, in past reviews for these books, but I'm going to say it again: I think it is awesome that Briggs has written her shifters to hold the power! I love that humans are prey and The Others control the land that the humans live on.

But what stands out over and over is the fact that the author isn't afraid to allow her shifters, or all of The Others, to act like they aren't human. The Crowgard, even in their human form, act and think like Crows. The Wolfgard act and think like Wolves. Simon reacts to things the way an animal would react, his mind thinks about things the way you imagine an animal would. And yet, somehow it doesn't make the story strange at all. I still ache for Simon to realize that he's in love with Meg.

I also loved, in this story in particular, that the characters that were previously side characters are taking more of an important role in the story.

I eagerly anticipate every single installment of this series. No, that's putting it mildly, I stalk the release of these books. So amazing.

3.5 stars, I enjoyed it, but I also lost interest at over halfway through and had to take a break, which is a big minus in my opinion.

I started this book immediately after finishing book 2, and then as mentioned I lost interest. I came back to it almost 2 months later and finished the last 30% in no time.

My best guess is that although these books are very good, they just follow a formula that become very recognisable after reading 2 or more back to back, and I have a big aversion to repeats, they bore me to tears.

So I will wait a bit to continue with the next book in the series, because I really like the story, and want to know how it ends, but I also recognise that I need a break to forget a bit about the previous book, to actually enjoy the next one.

This seems to be the second "season" of this series. Books 1 and 2 make up the first "season" where the overall story arc was concluded. Now we have the relationships, characters and day to day dynamics from the first two books that have been built over time and a new "arc" that will begin in this book. Again, no romance. Relationships are being built over time, but no romance.

Also, I noticed that this series may have started with a primary character, but it has moved into a bit of "roving eye" focusing on multiple story lines, multiple characters with their own lives. It is about an overall community and those people within it, as well as what is going on in the outside world.

No "hero and heroine" although there are a handful of primary characters, and a bit of relationship dynamic that is explored further, but no romance.

I went into the series expecting it to be a pnr, but it has turned into fiction, alternate universe, sometimes thriller, sometimes suspense, sometimes a bit of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship dynamics, fish out of water, and family/work/community drama.

A good read.

Solid entry into the series. Very incremental and yet interesting growth of the characters. I enjoy the progression of the other CS's stories and like that Bishop is expanding the world in a consistent manner, true to the rules she's previously outlined.
