Education is so important to me and that is just what this book gave me: an education on cancer, cancer prevention, and fighting the disease using our own body's natural defenses. The word 'cancer' brings with it many fears and questions. This book dispelled many of the fears and answered many of the questions. Knowing the basics of how the disease works and spreads in your body is powerful. This book gives you that. But knowing how your body naturally fights cancer cells and learning what foods you can eat (and avoid), how to live in a "cleaner" environment, and what activities can put your mind in a better state to fight the disease (such as meditation and exercise) is beyond powerful. It's taking your life in your own hands, respecting it, and living the best way you can to stay healthy. The book was meticulously researched and contains study upon study documenting how we can prevent and fight cancer and perhaps prolong our lives a bit longer if we are diagnosed with cancer than the time span our doctor gives us.
The subtitle of the book promised a new way of life. Alas, a lot of the food recommendations are gleaned from [a:Michael Pollan|2121|Michael Pollan|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1222103457p2/2121.jpg]; the other recommendations (exercise, don't be a stress bag, don't drink toxic waste, don't hang out inside nuclear reactors, etc) should, I hope, be common knowledge. The book does contain interesting information about how cancer and the body supposedly react to a healthy lifestyle.
Memoir and excellent research in digestible format. Inspiring work. Sad to read on Wikipedia that he has died but he lived twenty years after what might have been only weeks otherwise. This research needs to be done and I hope we get more of it.
A very informative, insightful book that makes you think about how your daily choices can effect your health. --Ann P.
I found this to be a really good read. It was very helpful to better understand how cancer works and how the body can fight against it.

Think it would be fun to turn this into a readers' theater.
A lot of great advice for general healthier living for ANYONE, not just those who have faced cancer. I appreciated that Servan-Schreiber emphasized that these lifestyle changes complement modern medicine, as I am grateful for the surgery and poisons that also killed the cancer. Will be working to implement some of these suggestions!
Before we start this review, I have been told that I am a harsh critic.
I believe this is a great book for people with limited knowledge of the topic. I have personally never experienced cancer. In fact, none of my friends or family have. I’m very thankful for that. But I felt that there were few exciting sections to me. I’m not sure if this is personal to me.
I’d also like to note that, while Walter Willett has made great discoveries, he has time and time again been proven wrong in his nutritional suggestions. He has a strong idea of how the body system works, but limited knowledge on day to day foods and connection to the system. I personally am skeptical of him and his work. Someone I know asked him directly about carbohydrates, and he could not properly categorize carbohydrates identified.
Great starter book. It kept my attention 2/3 of the time. I’m interested in continuing on this topic. Perhaps this book was just not for me, and I would still recommend it. I’m going to ask my partner, who has limited knowledge on cancer, to read it.
