DNF @ 30%
I received this book from NetGalley as an eARC in exchange for a review.
Girls Like Girls follows Coley, a teenager dealing with the loss of her mother as she moves to a new town to live with her estranged father. She befriends Sonya, a popular girl who seems to have it all. As their friendship grows, Coley realizes her feelings for Sonya go beyond friendship.
I rarely dnf books but I could tell this wasn’t going to be something I vibed with. It was just SO cringe and felt so forced for nostalgia. Maybe 2010 me would’ve liked it but 2024 me didn’t.

It’s… fine. Felt like I needed to read it and glad I did but there’s better sapphic books out there tbh. I also was expecting this to be a little more lighthearted but it was actually so dark??? Idk I really struggled with some parts because the MC was just taking L after L and it got to be too much…
ALSO as someone who romanced Haley in Stardew Valley trust me I GET the appeal of a mean femme but this one was a little too mean even for me!!!
Some notes about the audiobook specifically-
PRO: really enjoyed some of the sound design, how there would be music or ocean sounds, stuff like that.
CON: whenever there was a section with multiple voice actors talking (which thankfully wasn’t much) it was very apparent that they all had different mic setups and so the mixing sounded off.
ngl still teared up a bit at the end listening to the acknowledgments bc wow Girls Like Girls (the song/MV) really did change my life :’)
