Fun read though the Ronan chapters were convoluted and mehh.

Some of the art is hit or miss, but I have been enjoying everything thus far. On to Book Three.

A mixed bag, art and story. The Surfer part was my favorite. I appreciate how Marvel makes an attempt to tie together a lot of tiny disparate parts of their universe. I'm also eager to see how this all turns out!

The middle chapter of the annihilation arc assembles a few b list character such as super skrull and Ronan the Accuser as they try to block the horde of Annihilus. Sprawling story arc that is building up the next volume but is disjointed and out of pace.

Like the first book of Annihilation, this one has its ups and downs, as it's the re-printing of three lead-in miniseries by three different creative teams. The standout of the bunch is the Silver Surfer, with a gritty art style that probably shouldn't work (but mostly does) and a story that puts Surfer back in Galactus's hands and re-establishes his moral ambiguity and his power level.

Super-Skrull, by Javier Grillo-Marxuach (of Lost and Middleman fame), has its moments but can't seem to decide whether it's protagonist is a misunderstood hero or an anti-hero, which weakens it. However, as with the Drax story in the first volume, it's a key development of the character for the main Annihilation story to come.

The Ronan series is a bit forgettable, but readable, and like the others, it's important in where it leaves the character for the main story.

So this has to be one of the largest graphic novels I've read from Marvel. 12 issues, Silver Surfer, Super Skrull and Ronan. That's 3 characters I haven't read much about and definitely never read with them as the main "hero". This "Marvel Cosmic" thing is kind of a whole new world, or at least one populated with what feel like distant cousins I met at a wedding or cookout when I was 9.

It's not bad and total change of pace. I guess the only problem I have is that all the characters are REALLY powerful and the main villain (the bugs) are just evil for evil's sake. Fortunately all the main characters have other stories, rather than just squishing as many bugs a possible.

Now this went hard. Keith Giffen intentionally picking characters that most people have forgotten about led to such a phenomenal back and forth between the most unlikeliest of heroes.

Not as catchy as the first volume, but I think that's mainly because the featured characters were less interesting. The art was more consistent -- nothing really impressive but nothing distractingly bad. The similarities between the Annihilation wave and the Stygian Passover were noteworthy, what with them being from the same plotter and at the same general time. I'm a fan of using c-list characters in big events, even if none of these were familiar.

So in this, the second book of the Annihilation comic series, we get even more characters in the universe!

Many people have been introduced to the Silver Surfer in the second Fantastic Four film by Sony pictures, but we get a lot more information of who he is in this book and I really liked seeing that! We get to see his interactions with the other former heralds of Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. This also gives us some background of his power and relationships with the rest of the Marvel Comics Universe. He's a pretty cool character, in my opinion.

In this book, we also get a lot more information about Super Skrull. He's great and I love him. That's all.

Finally, we get to meet Ronan for real. I loved getting to see him as more than just the villain he is painted as in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. He gets a backstory and a reason for why he is the way he is! I am actually kind of sympathetic towards him, to be completely honest. I love it when people who can be seen as villains are portrayed as round characters who are more than just evil. He is The Accuser. He has the power to reduce people to ash at the drop of a few words, yet he only does it when he deems it necessary. That's a pretty cool move! Also, the fact that he is not working for the Annihilation crew is a redeeming quality if I have ever seen one!

I am keeping this review pretty short so I can move onto the next one! I can't wait to see how this ends!
