Oof. This book was such a slog, portions of it I zipped through but I couldn’t really get into the stream of consciousness style prose quality that persisted through the book. I liked getting this bizarre magical realist view of the 30 years following India’s independence but I didn’t really care for the characters much, or Saleem’s narrative style

Interesting concept, but had to grasp sometimes. Took me a while to get into, there missed a few details.

Beautifully symbolic, the symbolism is out the wazoo, everything is a symbol!
Magical realism... love how it weaved itself into what drives the plot forward, and helps to connect the characters' actions with the history.

Sabkuch ticktock hai — I was thinking about writing a nuanced review of Midnight's Children, but this quoted line from the book itself does its job.

Beautiful, magical, intricate, metaphorical, elaborate, heart-breaking, compelling, fulfilling.

It definitely got better as I got used to his writing style.
