I continue to be astonished by Brandon Sanderson's imagination. He thinks up such varied worlds and characters and this anthology really demonstrates that. A great collection whether you are already a fan or just dipping your toe into the Cosmere. I first read this about 5 years ago and it's fascinating to re-read now and see how the world's, stories and characters here have been developed/appear in the works I have read since.

A number of these short stories are some of Sanderson's most interesting works. These are either expansion of earlier works or quick looks at parts of the cosmere that might further be expanded upon. If you haven't read elantris, the mistborn trilogy, the first two stormlight books and warbreaker, this book might lose much on you. However the emperor's soul and sixth of the dusk can be read standalone and are amazing.

This was a bit of a mixed bag, as collections of short stories normally are, but I feel like all of them added to the Comere in some way. Most stories I enjoyed, but a few will stick with me as I continue my Sanderson journey.

Really liked:
  • The Emperor's Soul
  • Edgedancer
  • Mistborn: Secret History
  • Sixth of Dusk

Somewhere between decent and pretty good:
  • The Hope of Elantris
  • The Eleventh Metal
  • White Sand
  • Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell

Cringe:
  • Allowances Jak and the Pits of Eltania

As a note, I read this after reading Mistborn trilogy #1, Stormlight #1 and #2 and Elantris, as per Sanderson's recommendation, and I felt like this was a pretty good spot to include it.

Highlights were Sixth of The Dusk, and Shadows of Silence. Actual five stars for me.

The rest all sucked. Including Secret History. Sanderson is MCU-brained to the max I can't get past it.

FUCK Allomancer Jak. Some of the unfunniest, boring drivel I've ever read.

These essays and novellas were great. They really supplemented the main cosmere storylines and I ended up enjoying a lot of them more than the main books!
