After seeing all the buzz about the TV adaptation, I decided to start with the book series first (because they always say the books are better, right?!).

This was such a low-stress, easy read—perfect for a nostalgic thirty-something who just wants to sink into a sweet story about young love and growing up.

Belly’s character instantly transported me back to my teenage years and gave me that nostalgic, butterfly-filled feeling. If I’d read this as a teen, I know I would have been obsessed. The themes of young love and family don’t hit quite the same for me now, but I still appreciated them for what they were.

I’ll definitely keep reading the series (and then watching the show right after).

Woof this was so much worse than the TV show. Book belly is annoying af. Book Conrad is a total dick. Book Jeremiah is so much better all around. This felt way too YA for me and I found myself super annoyed.

Also, I know I'm not the target audience for YA but I think that even as a preteen or teen girl, I wouldn't have liked this book. Belly is so self absorbed- she's a terrible friend, a meh daughter, and has the personality of a whiny starfish. There's gross comments in this book about weight, female friendship, the value of romantic partnership, and a million other things. I would NOT recommend it as a coming of age book to a young woman.
