I’m just like Cassandra fr (gay, grad student, mentally ill).

Wonderfully tight prose, unhinged man hater main character, and a perfect balance of themes that had me both laughing and hurting the whole way through. Cassie chaotic evil that I will protect with my life actually !

This was... excellent. Thank you to BookTuber Sophia Reads Books for the recommendation.

I'm not sure why this book doesn't get more praise. It's brilliantly written, witty, funny, dark and full of love. A beautiful study on mental health, identity, family dynamics, and love. There are so many layers to the writing, so much intertextuality, but you don't need to get any of the 'fancy' references to get the characters. The characters are all very intellectual, yet somehow, they don't come off as pretentious - because they genuinely love philosophical discourse and classical music, and don't just use them as status symbols. The main character is sympathetic and selfish, charming and delightfully obnoxious. And I love that the conflict doesn't rely on 'childhood trauma' for once. This is a loving, flawed and clearly Neurodivergent-coded family.

To love and be loved, to live and let live are never assured things no matter how much biology or circumstance try to engender these experiences. Cassandra is not a wholly relatable character but her struggle, her identity and ultimately her own salvation makes the book such an engaging read. The afterword by Deborah Eisenberg may be one of my favorite things I’ve read this year.
