Actually pulled the wool over my eyes! It's refreshing to have the mystery concept turned a bit on its head, this time the focus isn't on 'who' and 'how' but the 'why'. Did lose points though because at some points I just longed for it to be a typical manor house murder mystery with one victim and multiple suspects. Great idea and execution, just lacked a little of that cosy Poirot familiarity.

3.5 stars. This one was interesting, but I admit I don't think I liked it as much as I have other Poirot books I've read. I always enjoy reading Poirot!!!! I had a great time!! But Hastings' little asides of Cust's stuff felt like... too obvious of a red herring? I mostly just found them vague and a little annoying. I didn't dislike Cust, but I think I just didn't like the format. I was also really vying on it being Crome/the police lmao.

I did like the ending/wrap-up. I thought it was interesting that, despite the older language and general views on disabled people, Poirot/Christie still stands that this disabled man is innocent and was manipulated to even believing himself to be the killer. I'm glad he got a happy ending. That, and that the real killer didn't die! I've read four other Poirot books and the killers always kill themselves, so it was a funny change of pace. I'm glad this guy will get what he deserves.
