I like Drizzt. He's fun, cool and has a great history. I just don't particularly love how omega-level he is sometimes. This book is pretty full of that, combined with a fairly standard but serviceable story.

This took me a while but i did very much enjoy this book it was a start to the Drizzt series and acted as a good beginning though I will admit it didn't draw me in as much as the other books causing me to not really want to pick it up. I didn't like how there was a villain just to be against the protagonist, Though I really do love the characters the book has introduced me to being Wulfgar, Catti Brie, Breunor and even Regis. The plot overall was kinda mid

Technically the writing is poor, with constant head hopping, direct exposition, and flat characters. If published now it would disappear into the void of pulp branded fiction with a one star rating.
So, why three stars? For me this book is pure nostalgia bait and I wanted to give it five. The story, the world, and the characters bring me straight back to the excitement of being a teenager fully immersed in a fantasy world. Three stars represents the rating fifteen year old me should have given the book. While its flaws are obvious the memories it carries have weight.

overall, the story and the writing in this one are average. which was what I had been worried about, but I'm still interested enough to continue on.
