I like Drizzt. He's fun, cool and has a great history. I just don't particularly love how omega-level he is sometimes. This book is pretty full of that, combined with a fairly standard but serviceable story.

This took me a while but i did very much enjoy this book it was a start to the Drizzt series and acted as a good beginning though I will admit it didn't draw me in as much as the other books causing me to not really want to pick it up. I didn't like how there was a villain just to be against the protagonist, Though I really do love the characters the book has introduced me to being Wulfgar, Catti Brie, Breunor and even Regis. The plot overall was kinda mid

overall, the story and the writing in this one are average. which was what I had been worried about, but I'm still interested enough to continue on.

This was not at all what I expected, and for that reason alone I could almost give it four stars. I always thought that I couldn't possibly enjoy this book as an adult. Based on the things I had heard about it (D&D origins and all) I was afraid that I had missed my window where I could enjoy it (somewhere in my late teen years I assumed). Apparently I hadn't missed that window though, this actually turned out to be a fun read. It maybe wasn't the best fantasy I've ever read but it was far from the worst, it had a good story line and interesting characters, it was written pretty well (better than I had expected) and was well paced. So yeah, good times. I learned something when I read this book. I'm full of it and need to stop being a fantasy snob, there's fun stuff out there that I'm probably missing because I assume I've matured beyond it. The more you know...

Enjoyed this book a lot. It feels very self-indulgent and I support it. It's certainly better than a good chunk of other fantasy books I've read from the 80s. I was laughing by the end of the last chapter, and I am very much looking forward to starting the next book.
