I no nothing about who Meryl was growing up prior to becoming an actor. So I was very curious to read this book. I found Meryl to have an innocence about her. She did not know what a beauty she was growing up and the strong presence she has when on stage or camera. Mr. Schulman does do his research well about Meryl. I did feel like I have gotten to know her better know. When she first did the reading for a school production, it was like I was there sitting in the audience and I could hear Meryl acting out the lines. Yet, despite liking what I read, I could not commit my full attention to this book. There was a lot of skimming done and I did not finish reading this book.

I listened to the audiobook, read by Eliza Foss. The narration was very good, easy to understand. I was not aware of Meryl's background in theater, which was covered in great detail. I enjoyed the later chapters of the book which dealt with her career in movies. The book ends in about 1980, rather too early in my opinion.

I gave this a three star, but I think it's more my fault for not being a bigger fan of hers. I now have to go back and watch a few dozen of her movies then I'm sure I will want to give it a four star review. Then I will have a better view of what the author was trying to describe.

When I read that Meryl Streep had not sanctioned this biography, I almost returned it to the library and did not read it. But I was swayed by my deep admiration for her and ended up reading it after all. I do agree with other reviewers that without Streep's involvement, some of the book fell flat. Much of it was a recitation of various things she had accomplished, without a true understanding of what she had experienced. But for a Streep groupie, it's hard to avoid this book entirely! She is definitely an amazing actor and artist.

I absolutely love Meryl, but this book just wasn't what I anticipated. It focused a lot on Meryl's college years and early days on the stage. It introduced a lot of people who were around her during those times and what they were experiencing in their own lives. I felt like I was constantly waiting to read more about Meryl's personal life and more about her life as she got older. It never really got there. It is very comprehensive about her earlier years and provides a thorough look into the theatre world at that time, in my opinion.

I just needed more. This was an interesting way to set this up, but there was so much not included that I just couldn't fall in love with it.

Quite a detailed biography... until approximately the early 80’s... then about three (or more) decades of life summarised in less than a chapter.
The above said, I found the book good and the narration good, even though for some reason I was more easily distracted with this one.
All in all, an interesting perspective of a life...
