I haven't read the second half of this book's story yet (it continues in The Crippled God), so I'll mostly defer judgement until I have. That said, this book was fantastic, as the Malazan books have been the whole way through. It suffers somewhat from being the first half of a 2400 page story and not its own self-contained 1200 page story. About 3/4ths of the way through, it becomes obvious that you're still squarely in the rising action. The climax is phenomenal, and it had me pacing the living room floor with my eyes bugging out. I have no idea how Erikson is going to end this series, and I have no idea how anyone could appropriately cap this masterpiece of a fantasy saga.

Oh, but keep in mind that this is by far the most disturbing and violent entry in the series. Yes, including Reaper's Gale with the inquisition.

Also, I am thrilled that my prediction was correct about

the Adjunct's goal being to free, not destroy, the Crippled God. I still think there has to be even more to it than the series has revealed.
