Beautiful prose. Gut wrenching yet cute story. Satisfying yet I-want-more ending.

This is a beautifully written tragic love story. This book follows two POV’s, Marion and Patrick and letters they write. Marion being in love with Tom and thinking her love is enough for the both of them and Patrick being Tom’s secret lover.
I can’t describe my love for this book but I find myself coming back to it again and again.
At the end of each last letter of that part of the POV I kept looking forwards to continuing their POV. And so on. I think it very well shows how gay relationships were being seen by outsiders in the 50’s.
It’s heartbreaking at times but it also made me feel incredibly joyful at others.

this book is so beautifully heartbreaking, i just finished it and all i want to do is cry but i’m on my way to school, on the train, so i can’t do that.
i’m so pissed at marion i truly am, i understand she was mad at tom for cheating on her but she had no right to do what she did to patrick.
and what the hell happened in venice?
i want more, i want more of this book, i want to know what happened in venice, i want to know what happened between patrick going to jail and the three of them being old and living together.
i want to inflict more pain in myself by reading this book again, i loved it so so much.

If you're looking for a book with a happy ending and queer joy, this isn't it. It's a telling of a life from 2 different perspectives - 2 people in love with the same man - and the outcome of those relationships as a result.

I didn't not enjoy this book, it was easy to read and there were some nice parts but it's not a must read for me. As a queer person, it will never not be wild to me reading about the criminalisation of the existence of lgbtq+ people.
