3.5 stars.

Pretty cool. Lots of commentary on conservation as well as Soviet and communist Chinese corruption in relation to tigers. I got this book mixed up with “Man-Eaters if Kumaon” but this was what the library had and so I kept reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival. While it took me some time to finish due to its wealth of information and rich storytelling, the narrative ultimately comes together beautifully. This book offers a compelling look at wildlife, survival, and the powerful bond between humans and their dogs. It's truly an amazing read!

This is one of those books that I truly thought I would start (maybe) but definitely never finish. However, I enjoyed this book from beginning to end.

First, a note about the Kindle version. I love the fact that the notes were hyper-linked, so I could check them out as I went along. This was published in a very Kindle-friendly way, but with one exception. The map provided at the beginning was a little small and hard to read.

Now, on to the book. There were so many great moments and quotes I clipped from this book, and, perhaps later I could go back and add them to this. But, as an overall, here's are my thoughts:

1. People suck. They are greedy, evil, sneaky creatures. I think tigers should feed on people more often.

2. I rooted for the tiger throughout the entire book. I kept hope alive to the very end that the tiger would just disappear into the ether, and we would never know what happened to him. My least favorite part of the book was when the tiger was killed.

3. There was so much detail to this story. I fully intend to read Martin's The Sheltering Desert, and possibly a comprehensive work on the history of Far East Russia. I am completely fascinated by Uexkull's umwelt and umgebung.

I will end with a link to one of my Goodread's friends review of this book, which is perfection: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/142461073. Laura, wonderful review!

The tiger's story weaves together Russian history, folklore, conservation issues. A little slow in parts, but worth the read, especially if you like this kind of non-fiction.

Slow until the end then it’s a page turner. Learned so much about tigers. Love the wealth of knowledge in here.

An interesting read, but by the end I was extremely frustrated with the ratio of story to background and speculation.
