VERY fucked up. but i think i loved it. still. very fucked up. puts you in a mood.
I read this down to the last word in the acknowledgements. You don't have to relate to this: it's hard and raw enough that it speaks for the truth of so many 'unanchored and unnoticed' children like August and Jack, so young, FAR too young for fend for themselves. It's a harrowing, beautiful, twisting kind of story, but there's hope in it.
August and Jack use each-other as anchors, unable to move forward without detrimental impact. It's something you as a reader have to make yourself understand, which is actually one of my favourite things about reading–observing and taking it all in without my own judgement or my own limited experiences to compare it to. You kind of enter this stripped bare, and you let it take its mark on you. It left a great big gash, invisible, for only my eyes to see. Here are some passages I liked a lot:
‘Honestly, it made a bit of sense. Perception is relative. So is sanity, if you think about it. It's totally a Minority vs. Majority thing. If you fall on one side of the line, take a ticket and proceed. If you fall on the other, shit gets real.’
‘“My mom once told me that being alone makes you feel weaker every day, even if you're not,” he said quietly. “But it's not as bad if you're with other people who are alone, too. We can hold each other up like a card tower.”’
