I have never ever had such a visceral “what the hell was this?” reaction. Never. This wasn’t bad. It was nothing. The chapters are short, descriptions are just not enough, dialogue is… it’s there, I guess.
I don’t get the praise for this. It’s just bland. The idea, on paper, is fantastic but this is not what I’d call a good execution.

This book wrecked me. I loved everything, from the deep explorations of a toxic relationship to the fantasy aspects and especially how the pages darken as August and Jack went deeper and deeper into their insanity. This book contains such a powerful message and it’s well written too. The only thing I didn’t like was how much language there was.

Me and my bff read this book in one sitting and it DESTROYED ME. I don’t remember the last time a stand alone made me cry

the concept is really interesting but the execution leaves something to be desired. the whole book felt like it was just briefly summarizing the events that happen (and maybe that’s the point….? idk) and i didn’t love the mixed media element. the photos especially did not work for me (oftentimes, within the context of the story, i was wondering who would’ve taken the pictures….). plus i struggled with all the characters just being totally chill with jack’s vivid hallucinations and i didn’t feel like jack had a reason to not be concerned about them….?
obviously it’s not uncommon for people with psychotic disorders to be resistant to treatment, but he had a brain tumor?
idk i feel like it could’ve been explained better

I've never read a book quite like this one in my entire reading career. The writing style is quite unique and engaging, with short chapters that were easy to follow. In fact, I read it in one sitting and finished it in a couple of hours.

There are so many things going on in here. Every minor character had a significant role in the story; even if there were many of them, it didn't confuse me since they each had a purpose.

Initially, I thought that this was going to be about two guy best friends and their shenanigans. I didn't read the blurb, which is a rarity for me. I never really expected them to have such deep feelings for each other.

This book is more than just two parentally neglected teenagers who enable each other. It's more than just about their codependency, their relationship that's infused with toxicity. It's also about how they cope, their survival, their devotion for each other. Their love for each other. They, in a way, balance each other out.

Is it healthy? Probably not. But it works for them. We cope with our demons in our own ways that may not be "suitable" or "right" but it they may be the only ways that we can survive.

This was a memorable read, something that I won't forget anytime soon. I'm glad that I came across it.

I usually have a difficult time with magical realism but this was by far the best one I've read. Also, I totally recommend reading the physical copy

I loved this book. Even if you don’t read the book, just buy it so you can read the authors note. Ugh. The feels. These two boys and what they deal with. Oh my poor heart. This book is one of them books which you will remember months after you’ve read it. It’s just unforgettable!
I would recommend anyone to pick this beautiful yet heartbreaking book up.

This book wrecked me in all the right ways.

Queer?
Ill mental health?
Dubiously healthy codependent relationships?
