I could also tell that this was a woman that was written by a man, not necessarily in a bad way- but in a way that I don’t think many women that I know would personally think/act/do things. Overall it was fine but if you’re looking for a witchy book that has a very strong lead character (who was also written by a man) I would highly recommend Slewfoot by Brom.

I enjoyed reading this as there was plenty of tension and the world for the most part felt real to me. However I became increasingly frustrated with the main character’s poor decisions (there’s a fair amount of idiot plot here I think) that made especially the last 50 pages or so difficult to get through without sighing. The book was a page turner for me, yet by the end the story as a whole felt a little silly, and I would have liked to have seen a more realistic conclusion.
Story was dragging & I just could not listen to the "thee, thou" business of the audio any longer.
Made it to ch14 of 39.

This book was a new area of historical fiction and mystery for me. I had a hard time getting through the first half, but I could not stop reading because I needed to know what happened. I was so glad I finished this book!
Very interesting. The tone of the book is so muted, but the things that are happening are so infuriating and crazy that it makes for quite the juxtaposition. Being a woman back then sounds like such a miserable experience.
I haven’t read much historical fiction about this time in history, and haven’t read anything for a while, and it was interesting having a deeper perspective. The author does a good job of establishing the setting, from the language, food, clothing, etc. There’s a long build up to the end, which seems to happen very quickly. Personally I’m not a fun of very abrupt endings, and this one did seem a little convenient and a bit unlikely to me. Overall it was decent read, especially if you’re interested in historical fiction from this era.
