Veronica Roth

3.62 AVERAGE

As Veronica Roth's adult debut I had high expectations and I am glad to say this did not disappoint. Roth took a unique twist by instead of basing the story surrounding a big battle it was in fact based ten years later.

Admittedly I was confused in the beginning as the book includes excerpts from top secret files which at first seem slightly out of place, however the author does an amazing job at explaining everything that makes everything seamlessly tie in together.

This by all means is not a book for everyone. The characters are very love or hate but the writing style is really nice. I would recommend everyone at least trying to give this book a go but go into it prepared to focus and accept subtle pieces of given information.

Arc provided to me by NetGalley and Hodder Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.

Multiple dimensions, a dark villain, a prophesy of worlds ending. Dynamic characters that I didn't want to let go. Loved how the story built up, how all the pieces came together at the end. It was a little slow to start for me, but midway really picked up. There are some things that were rushed and I don't like how we learned the history of the Dark One and his motives. I need more and I hope a sequel comes soon!

Ooof, that was a slow read. The last 150 pages or so we’re actually interesting, with a twist I didn’t see coming. All the other “twists” were annoyingly obvious-annoying because the characters muddled around for another 3 long chapters before figuring it out.

It wasn’t a bad book, the premise was really interesting (what happens 10 years after the heroes from a YA novel save the world?) and it was nice to see Roth pick up on the criticism that hit her last series and really integrate it into her latest book, but-and I really can’t stress this enough-IT WAS SO SLOW OMG. Not sure if I’d bother with the second book, I’m not sure where it would lead anyway, given that this one ended quite neatly.

I have always admired Veronica's work and writing. I have love Divergent dearly, and I have defended it since I read them, so when HMH granted my wish to read this book in exchange for an honest review, I felt excited to read myself to sleep.

When it comes to Chosen Ones, I was excited to read it. The book was entertaining, but something didn't fully click with me. Her writing is incredible, but sometimes it was a bit difficult to keep up with the novel. One moment, there are scenes of action, and then you "flip" the page, and the pace changed so much that you have to go back to make sure you understand what is happening.

An element that I think is distracting are the poems, stories, letters, and pieces of other "books" in between the main story, I scan through them as most of them did not add much value to the story.

The author wrote this book intending to have you hooked since the beginning. Veronica's decision to narrate the story of the heroes 10 years after they fought is intriguing because you want to know what the mystery is, or what messed them up so much, but, again, Roth changes the story-line and narrates the story in another timeline. Once in this new timeline and pace, I find the story to give some disappointing and predictable turns.

Besides this, I hold my ground saying this book is entertaining and with some potential. I am not sure how the sequel will turn out, but I will love to see it for myself.

Basically the premise of this book is, what happens after the 'Chosen Ones' complete their destiny in killing the bad guy?

Sloane and the rest of the Chosen are 10 years from the defeat of the Dark One and trying to figure out what next.

This was an interesting enough concept then there is a twist that turns everything on its head and makes an interesting story a gripping one.

For me, this book was something really different and that I thoroughly enjoyed reading

Sadly this book fell flat for me.

The author tried hard to make this an adult book, but to me it seemed more YA.

Sloane was a spoiled brat most of the time and I felt for Matt. He gave his all and she ignored him.
All of the chosen ones were dealing with the aftermath in their own way, but it seemed immature and that is why I can’t see this as an adult book.

The story doesn’t flow smoothly and every couple of chapters it’s reports or articles from the past.

It was hard for me to finish and I kept putting it down to read other books, so now I finally finished it and can’t say I enjoyed the ride.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars. Really great story building and character development. I liked that the book had "documents" in it to help the reader get a better understanding of the past without the narrator telling it. Unique story and ending too! Of the three parts of the book, part three was the most interesting. The first two parts are essential especially if this is setting up a series but part three is where the story really comes alive.
adventurous tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

So we all know the trope of "the chosen one". An individual or group of individuals are picked by fate, destiny, or the powers that be to face some great evil or threat and go on a quest to take down the Big Bad who's threating the land. But what happens after the good guys save the day? How do the chosen ones cope when they fulfill the purpose for which they've spent weeks, or months, or years? How do they handle the fame, PTSD, loss, and secrets? And what if the Big Bad they took down... isn't completely dead and gone?

Chosen Ones is such a story.

This book was a bit intimidating to me because I once read the Divergent trilogy by Roth and I really loved the first book but the last book ruined it for me. Chosen Ones had one trope that I particularly love in my books and that's the "chosen one" trope.

This book is set in Chicago and it follows five teenage characters brought up together by a prophecy and they're trained to fight the Dark One. The Dark One is our villain and he is killing so many people at a time. Once our Chosen Ones defeats him, they can finally go back to their normal life.... or not? The book starts off 10 years after the Dark One's death and we follow Sloane's POV. After they finally defeated the villain, our heroes are now celebrities and followed everywhere by paparazzi. Unfortunately, life is not easy for our heroes since they're still struggling with what happened and the trauma they went through. Sloane lives with Matt (another chosen one) since they're in a relationship together. We follow Sloane's POV as she's trying to move on and she seriously hates the fame, she really wants to be left alone. She's struggling with PTSD and fighting so hard against flashbacks that reminds her of the trauma. Until one day, one of the Chosen Ones dies and they're again brought up together in the funeral memorial. This is when Sloane wonders if the nightmare is actually over.

This is a slow book and it's a character-driven story. The world is amazing. It feels a bit like we're in the future. I honestly enjoyed Veronica's writing, I got sucked right into it. I loved seeing the aftermath of a big battle. We rarely get to see what happens with our heroes. This book delves right into it and I loved seeing how each character was trying to find a normal life. I loved Sloane so much. She's so complex and raw. She's in so much pain after what happened and she feels like nobody really understands her. I really was intrigued by her story and I've been wanting to know more of what happened when the Dark One was alive since he's still haunting her dreams.

We get glimpses of the past throughout flashbacks, secret transcriptions & mixed media. We get to see how these children were brought up together by the prophecy. I love the themes that are explored in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adult sci-fi that deals with the aftermath of trauma. I'm seriously intrigued by the sequel because it did not end in a cliffhanger. It can go in any direction at this point and I'm definitely keeping an eye next year for the release.

I'm giving this book 5 stars. It is definitely one of my favorite 2020 books so far.

(P-S.: if you love Star Wars, Kylo Ren & the Chosen One trope, you should totally check this book NOW!)
