I am torn between giving this a 3.5 or 4 *
I actually enjoyed this story.
I love the idea of sci-fi fantasy series.
However coming into this book, I was trying to see where the sci-fic elements fall into.
There wasn't much of it but more of the fantasy elements.
The concept of the story telling of the book is interesting.
It gets between a POV between past and present with articles, documents, interviews and all which I find very fun to read.
The plotline was very fast and direct but there wasn't much action as I hope for.
I didn't get attached to the characters as much.
I don't feel like we really know who they are except Sloane.
Who is annoying at times and I kind of understand why she is having that attitude with what she has gone through.
I felt like Matt deserve a better storyline.
I feel like it could have give me more.
I don't mind it for being a standalone.
However, I am intrigued to what it is going to happen next.

I really wanted to like this one because I’m such a Roth fan. Unfortunately, I found myself zoning out while listening. Maybe it’s just me and the current circumstances that didn’t keep me engaged. I might try it again at a later date. For now 3

The description of this book that got me to read it was, "What would it be like for the teenage 'chosen ones' ten years after they defeat the magical bad guy?" And at first, it was interesting to see how one hero embraced his role as a celebrity, while another suffered from PTSD. But that story only lasts for the first quarter of the book, at which point the chosen ones are sucked into an alternate universe to go be chosen ones again.
I just couldn't connect to any of the characters. Not a one. I was bored, bored, bored, bored. I wish I had stopped reading in the middle when I felt like stopping reading.

This book was enjoyable but it wasn't really an adult book. A lot of the adult themes that could have been utilised to explore the concept of hero's dealing with PTSD were dropped for typical YA tropes.
However I enjoyed the story and Sloane's character worth reading but don't expect anything to deep.

I wanted to love this. I wanted to love the traumatised YA heroes all-grown-up. I wanted to realise with a seeping dread that children had been sent to save the world like lambs to slaughter by people who cared primarily about their own survival, and I wanted to know how do you keep living when the grown ups didn't care whether you made it out alive.
This book isn't that. The characters could be 18 more easily than they read as 28, a few weeks could have elapsed since they last saved the world instead of 10 years for all they'd done with it. The characterisation was.... Sparse to the point of non-existence. It was impossible to care about the characters when you know so little about them - and what you DO know is explained in clunky exposition to explain their baffling behaviour after the fact.
Every chapter is punctuated with "memos" and "files" supposedly to piece together the story, but they're so boring I gave up and skipped most of them. Explaining the mechanics of your interdimensional conflict doesn't really add value when the main character is so vague that you don't care if she lives or dies.

Three days. For three days have I tried reading this book and I'm still only at 9%. The articles and government documents are super annoying and then the actual story is so badly written it could have been written by someone on Watpad, no scratch that, people on Watpad write even better stories.
I've been procrastinating reading this book for months, because I had seen so many negative reviews and I didn't want to start a book that I knew I wouldn't like. I did it anyway and booooy it sucked. I do not recommend reading this book.
