Maybe 4.5? I really like this book. I enjoyed it more than the first, probably because I knew the characters and the world and was excited to jump right back in. It did feel very much like the second book out of a trilogy, lots of separating the main characters and various moving pieces, clearly all moving towards the third book.

I liked that xialia and serapio are still into each other and want to find each other, even if it was frustrating that they never met up in this book. He's learning more about being the crow God reborn, and she fled with iktan to presumably be a spy for serapio. Meanwhile we got more on her backstory, and even got to meet her mom on the island with all the spear maidens.

Naranpas journey was also interesting, discovering that she had been touched by the Sun God and had powers within her, and using them to unite the coyote clan once again underneath her as matron. I liked when she met up with sarapio in the end, and they did fight but also sort of declared a truce and discussed how they don't actually want to fight only their gods want them to.

Def want to read the third book.

Initially I felt like nothing was happening but came to realize that the political intrigue and moving characters like pieces on a board was the plot here. Love me some political intrigue and I am looking forward to how all the different arcs and threads resolve in book 3. I enjoyed the development that occurred in the Maw
return of Coyote clan!
but I did struggle with the explosion of magic in this book. We went from little hints here and there in book 1 to full blown shape-shifting and building structures out of corpse parts in this one. It was a lot but I am trusting the vision for book 3.
