This was an emotional and hard-hitting, yet wholesome and funny book. I enjoyed reading about Coyote and Rodeo and all of the found family along the way. I related to Rodeo, since I am a 45 year old who is also grieving, but I found myself relating to Coyote a lot, as well. I love how the author portrayed them both and their unique ways of dealing with their grief. The side characters were wonderfully crafted as well. I would definitely read more from this author and will look into his backlist, for sure. Not five stars from me, but a very high four stars.

I really enjoyed this emotional little story. I think it would make a wonderful read-aloud. There was loss, friendship, cute animals, and car chases. There was a hippie father named Rodeo who would not let his daughter call him dad in an effort to block out the death of his wife and other two daughters. There was cleverness, reconciliation, and redemption. And despite some serious subject matter, it was funny as well as tender.
I really enjoyed this story.

This was not one of my favorite middle grade books, but I can see how a middle schooler would enjoy it, with how resolutely Coyote deals with everything that happens. I felt frustrated by how the roller coaster just kept going; there were so many "major obstacles" that kept popping up, but Coyote and Rodeo didn't really delve into the heart of their issues until the last quarter of the book (and that's being generous, I'm pretty sure it was even closer to the end). I'm not saying I wanted the whole book to be sad, but I had hoped for more touching on Coyote and her grief rather than smoothing over how she never says goodbye to anyone, and not at all addressing how this 12-year-old feels as though she's in taking care of her dad rather than the other way around.

A teacher would love this book because of all of the shout-outs to other popular novels, hero's journey, and geography lesson.
I enjoyed the book, but I wonder if all of the minor characters are necessary. I also wonder why the author decided to go with a female protagonist. No complaints, just curiosity.
