Meh...

There are definitely some good things about this one. Mostly the romance in the first half of the book. Slow moving, really sweet, decently character-oriented. The horse date was so cute! (Horses are terrifying, but undoubtedly lesbian culture.) I didn't fall in love with the characters, but I liked them well enough.

But there was also a dazzling amount of bad. The writing was bland, sometimes too much (do we really need to be told 47 times that Reese has a bunch of electronic devices?) and sometimes not enough (all those big emotional reveals were so BLAH). And speaking of emotional reveals... the whole reasoning behind Gwen and Marcie's treatment of Reese was so silly. It didn't hold together, not one bit. And narratively it was all over the place. I hated those clumsily-told chapters that just leapt back into the past, the one random chapter from a sudden new POV and the passages and passages of dialogue where characters just TOLD TOLD TOLD everything. No showing! It got boring.

And idk... something about the book/the writing felt... plastic? It reminded me of reading A Date With Angel, which was agonisingly bad. Coupled with all the inconsistencies and bits that just plain didn't make sense... I couldn't enjoy it much. Also I never want to hear the word 'sprite' ever again. That wasn't endearing, it was weird.

But the romance though! It was very cute.

Also: I listened to the audio-book. Hollie Jackson was good, I think her voice for Reese was really well done? And she just had a voice that's good for listening to. I felt like it was missing... something, though.

Not a terrible book? But not good either.

My complaints about the way disability was portrayed in this book would be longer than the book itself
