Stars ~ 5

My first five star read in a long time!

I absolutely loved every page of this book. I could not put it down; really, I basically read it in one sitting.

I loved the characters, I loved the plot, I loved everything.

It had me crying at least four times. I had to take some time afterwards to just be sad about it.

My new favourite book.

Is it ethical to sacrifice parts of yourself and use people to get what you want, and where do you draw the line? I think Evelyn Hugo, along with many other characters, effectively explored that concept in this book. I liked that each character seemed real enough to come off the page. Something about the story just didn't hit the mark for me, despite how well written and engaging it was. I couldn't relate to any of the characters, and everything seemed really superficial. I liked Cecilia much more than Evelyn, and couldn't see why Evelyn deserved a happy-ish ending with her and her family. In exchange for that happy-ish ending with Cecilia, I wish Evelyn had marred her own reputation somehow so she could escape her glamorous lifestyle and truly redeem herself.

Honestly, the depiction of race and the use of race just for the sake of progressing plot is extremely problematic and completely misses the mark. I’m confused as to how this book has risen so high, when a much deeper conversation should be had on the use of Black characters as dispensable for the sake of plot. There was so much nuance that SHOULD have been mentioned. So many issues and topics that should have been touched upon that were blatantly ignored and were downright harmful to the BIPOC community. If you’re not going to write BIPOC identity correctly, with the care it deserves, don’t do it at all.
