This book started as a typical biography of a Hollywood actress from the slums.The MC Evelyn Hugo is an A lister who is almost in retirement.In the start she seems as a power hungry,gold digger but her character develops later on.

The last 50 or so pages makes the book worth it and will make you shed some tears if you resonate with the characters! The complexity of the characters in the context of real life are presented in very digestible and accessible ways: even if you can't quite relate to someone's identity or sexuality, you can still understand the universal feelings and experiences they have as people. Evelyn's immigrant heritage, her relationship with Harry and her daughter, and

her eventual death

especially resonated with me and were well reflected in Reid's writing. 

The occassional contextualization of Evelyn's biography paired with Monique's own life was a nice touch that hepled wrap up loose ends effectively. As a result, would argue that Monique and the "contemporary" cast of 2017 were more plot devices than characters, but it didn't necessarily hurt the story. This novel definitely holds up to the hype it received and deserves a read.

I would have given this book 5 stars if Monique hadn’t been so terribly rude and annoying. I almost DNF’d the book at 30 pages  because she was so horrendous. I don’t understand why she felt she could speak the way she did to ANYONE. She was caviler with words & didn’t interpret things correctly, ever. Evelyn had to continuously correct her. I know the reason why Evelyn didn’t drop Monique as a writer, but she should have just told Monique the truth. Then, gotten a better ghost writer for her memoir. 

       Now, I loved Evelyn. Her story was just constant heartbreak. It’s hard to reflect on the fact that she only truly WANTED two of the seven husbands. It was hard to watch her struggle with her sexuality vs society and it’s scrutiny. It’s amazing that she went through everything to just have a job she loved AND a partner she loved. But it was so hard to maintain that love and happiness. I’m so happy she got to live and love in Spain.
I also loved Harry & was devastated by how he passed. I cried abou the funeral. And it was tough to like Celia. But Monique I could absolutely have done without.

This is one of the best books that I’ve read in a long time. I actually listened to the audio book and couldn’t put it down. Taylor Jenkins Reid has written something so timeless and in a way that keeps you entertained throughout. The characters are so real and Evelyn’s story is so heartbreaking and magical. I’ll be thinking of this book for awhile.

This book is mesmerizing from start to finish. I loved the old Hollywood references, the voice Jenkins Reid gave to Evelyn, and how it felt accurate to the character and the time she would have lived in without feeling dated or out of touch. I really couldn't put it down.
