This book was a lot. Sometimes I had to put it down and walk away for a few hours. The story and the characters will be something I'll think about for a long time probably.

Audiobook narration: 5/5

I spoiled myself watching the first few seasons of the tv adaption first but enjoyed the book! Took me AWHILE to get through as a buffer book/put it down for a few months but glad I picked it back up. Very similar to the show, a bit less saucy though :/ Definitely great for those who enjoy historical fiction (1740s UK) and a good intro for newcomer fantasy people! And now mentally planning a trip to Scotland!

Planning to read the second book in the series to follow Claire and Jamie in France, stay tuned!

Outlander follows a woman called Claire in the 1940s who is visiting Scotland with her husband. On an adventure out she comes across some stones that end up transporting her to the 1700s Scotland where she ends up in throws with a man called Jamie.

My only real exposure to this phenomenon is through one of my close friends who adores this series and since she read my favourite book, I decided to read hers.

This book is potentially the weirdest mix of genres I've come across: there's two historical settings, romance, time travel, war, and A LOT of sex. Yet somehow this amalgamation of ideas had me desperately turning pages to learn more.

It's heavy going as the nature of the setting means there's hefty amounts of dialogue exposition and it really is graphic on sexual and non consensual sex so bear that in mind if you're affected by that.

It is truly a marvel how Gabaldon went from never having written before to coming out with Outlander and what a gift it is to the world.

Despite all the trigger things that happen in the book it was great book !

Read this book before right after season one of the show came out and was disappointed it wasn't like the show. But now that I'm a bit more of a mature reader I really liked this book, it definitely got me out of a funk and now I'm excited to read the rest of the series. Definitely got me into historical fiction too.

okay wow - 800 pages of fantasy historical fiction sprinkled with some spice 🔥 def not for the faint of heart and plenty of morally grey / immoral areas of the book for sure, but overall Gabaldon does a fairly decent job representing this time period and makes a book exciting to read. I’ve seen the show and decided to read the books and even though I knew everything that was coming it was nice to see what the show DIDNT include, how they changed it, etc all the while, the book stayed interesting to me !
