It was a hard book to read. Very graphic and upsetting at times. That said it's very well written and the prose and pacing are beautiful. It provides an important insight into Ireland during that time and a hopeful look at what the country might become. I didn't find myself truly enjoying the book till about 200 pages in but I think it was worth the effort besides.

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf, waiting to be read for a long time.  I'm so happy that I finally read it.  It's a beautiful story about a boy born in 1945 in Ireland.  I loved how this story was not only about a gay boy growing up in a country controlled by the Church but was also a history of Ireland.  The author had so many interesting characters that I loved or despised.  I'll be thinking about this book for a long time.

Very compelling book and even though it’s very thick I still raced through it. I very rarely reread a book but I did for this. Brilliant scope of history and character development. Some very dark plot points. This book is also so funny and made me laugh out loud which not many books can do.  A very special gem.

An unflinching look at what it meant to be gay in mid century Ireland, but not without plenty of hope and love. There were plenty of brutal moments, but there was a surprising amount of humor throughout. The through-line of a separated family weaved in with the theme of found family was really beautiful. A tad too long but it was worth the read.
