There was definitelt a good story in here, but the direction felt kind of jumbled, like it wasn't sure where it wanted to go.  About halfway through the book, all of the characters starting being horrible towards one another.  Sometimes they recognized that they were in the wrong, but they never really changed.  It made it less enjoyable to read, since all the characters became increasingly unpleasant as it went on.

I am very sad that it is over. Picking up this book throughout the week felt like catching up with a dear friend. I loved the format of the book - told in first person, it spans over 70 years and checks in with the author every 7 years. The plot was deeply routed in the main character’s relationships but also touched on historical and cultural realities in a way that only added to the overall story. I loved it.

I hope they make it a movie or limited series.

The story covered difficult topics, but did so with beauty and humor. I loved the flawed characters. The dialogue was often hilarious in an understated way. The span of the story from post WWII to (for all intents and purposes) the present day made reference to important moments in time and laid bare for the reader the immense shifts in the world, in culture, in public opinion over the years. Cyril is a witty, if somewhat unreliable, narrator. His growth throughout the story was believable and meaningful. I loved all the connection points between the wide cast of characters across time and place. The story had a beautiful symmetry and a satisfying ending for the people I grew to love over the course of reading this book.
