This book is fantastic, but it doesn't quite hit the same high-intensity notes as the first in the series.  This beginning of this book is absolutely heartbreaking and honestly despite knowing the book would take Kaiyo back to his family's pack I didn't want him to forgive them. I don't think they showed that they deserved Kaiyo's forgiveness. For me to fully enjoy this book there would have needed to be much more groveling on the part of the pack and much more reflection on Kaiyo's part.  The romance in this book is also much more understated than in the first of the series, and I think it is less well done. While it is a second chance romance, so there is a background for the relationship, it never feels like there is anything explosive or inevitable about Kaiyo and Ahmik.  The aspect of the story where every time Kaiyo takes off his scent blocking amulet Ahimk just about loses his mind was adorable and full of longing, but I didn't feel that from any other parts of the story.  I think the book is good, I was fully engaged throughout, it was just a small letdown after how fantastic I found the first book.

As a mentally ill person, I adored the focus this book has on therapy and seeking help from professionals. I loved the fact that Kaiyo brought that into his practice as well and that he wasn't the only character in the book who sought therapy.

I did not love this book quite as much as the first one, but that's not a slight against it, I just loved the first one a whole heck of a lot. That said, this book changed me in deeply positive ways, helped me overcome some of my own struggles and hang ups, and added a depth to the worldbuilding of this mythos in some VERY cool ways. Also, it was emotional as all heck--I've found that's my favorite thing about Marina's writing, how deeply you can FEEL everything that's happening.
