This book is sloppy, undisciplined, full of terrible dad jokes. I liked it a lot.

This book needed to be written, just as -- many years ago -- Bored of the Rings needed to be written.

Our heroes keep getting overmatched and getting away with it. Of course they do! After about 50 pages you knew they would.

Moog is a comic wizard the likes of which we haven't seen since Jack Vance's work.
I liked the revenant, more for his attitude than anything.

Near the end, Ganelon takes on an enormous Infernal; this is where I had to decide how to view this book. Spoiler warning
Spoiler He waits for his opponent to swing then runs up his sword blade.
. I stopped reading. I thought, "In a book full of ridiculous things, this is the most .." but then the voice on my other shoulder said, "Of course it is. This is the climax of the action. What COULD it be except more ridiculous than anything else?" That's when I decided to chuckle and go with the flow.

Under all the hilarity there's a quite plausible plot, and I can't even fault the use of airships for the occasional "Just When It Seemed That All Was Lost" moment.

Go read an Abercrombie or something else about grim mercenaries. Then come and read this. You'll plotz.

Oh my gods.
This was SUCH a good read. I hoped it would be entertaining when I started it, but I wasn't prepared just how much I would fall in love with it.
I laughed, I cried, I marked many passages. This book has it all.
If you check the author's website, you'll see a lot of pages about background stuff on KotW and it gave me warm fuzzy feelings when I had just started out reading the book. Because you can tell how much Mr. Eames loves the world he built. And the longer you read, the more you will feel this and you will also begin to love it. The wold is funny (so many good jokes) and charming and the characters ... oh the characters. I love everyone in this book, no exceptions.
I'm sorry I can't really write anything that makes sense. My mind is buzzing with feelings for this book. It was one of the best reads I every had the pleasure to lay eyes on. It instantly jumped to one of my favourites, even before finishing.
I'm more than looking forward to the second book. And I hope Mr. Eames will let us visit his world in the further future too.

While the story is interesting, the portrayal of female characters and constant sexualizing of everything kept drawing me out of it. The fact that it reads like an ongoing D&D campaign is fun but also doesn’t help the story move along as we go from encounter to encounter (eg what was really the point of the cannibals). Towards the last ~50 pages the pacing picks up and I liked the idea of how the battle is faced in the end.

Yet, sadly, there’s just too many dick jokes for my taste.

This was a fun read. Very interesting new take on the genre with of course many familiar elements.
In a world where sell-swords and mercenaries are treated as heroic celebrities, the characterization of the grizzled veterans who make up the long-in-the-tooth band Saga carries the day. Plenty of monsters, adequate worldbuilding, and a handful of touching moments makes for a very well-rounded and enjoyable, if predictable, story that keeps you coming back for more.
