An Ember in the Ashes

A solid read

I rated this book four out of five stars because it is incredibly detailed with great characters, descriptions, and comparisons. The characters are three dimensional, they make mistakes and bad decisions like any real person would, and both Elias and Laia have smart character development. The author uses great word choice, using metaphors that are descriptive while still displaying the characters views, and every chapter made me want to read more. I recommend this book to anyone who has not read it yet because it is amazing. Nothing in this book is black and white, and that is why I liked it so much.

This book was actually pretty good. It has hardly any romance which is something I’m usually not a fan of but I got around it because there was like a love square hunted at which was very different for me. In the beginning this book was a little slow and the world building is kind of confusing when it comes to the different classes but it doesn’t really matter as long as you get the understanding that Laia is a slave and Elias is a new Mask graduate (basically a soldier/assassin). There are parts in this book that I really just wanted to throw it across the room because I was just so pissed. I did like watching Laia character grow in confidence in herself and become brave like her mother was. I also enjoyed reading Elias‘s mental turmoil and also resolving some of it by the end of the book. Helene was a very complex character and I’m curious to see how she develops in the next book and if we possibly get a book with her perspective in it because she is something else. There are moments where I hate Helene and there are moments where I love Helene. She’s very complicated. Keenan is a very mysterious character and I can’t wait to see how his character evolves in the next book and how his relationship grows with Laia and how it is complicated with Elias in the picture now.

Also this book I didn’t tab a lot for it I only have three quote tabs, two romantic tabs, and one tab of a scene I enjoyed. If you liked the action and the storyline of Throne of Glass with the sprinkle of the romance but it’s not a heavy plot point I think you would like this book.

“You are an ember in the ashes, Elias Veturius. You will spark and burn, ravage and destroy. You cannot change it. You cannot stop it.”

This was a great buddy read with a friend! Now this is what you call a good fantasy! Blackcliff academy, although very horrible, makes for a very interesting setting. It’s a place that destroys people’s souls and humanity. The book gets dark quick and some really evil things happen. There are a lot of really horrible characters, one in particular being the Commandant who is the ruler of the academy and another who I absolutely despised.

The dual pov meant getting to see both sides of the academy. Watching Laia’s character development was really great with the way she slowly became more confident. The way she got treated by everyone, ugh I felt so bad for her! Elias was such a great character to read about especially his dilemma with what he wanted vs what he had been trained for. The trials that he went through were so intense! I didn’t know what sort of thing would happen so the first really threw me and the third trial in particular was really horrible 😫

Another character to mention is Helene. She is very complex and there were a few things she did that made me feel like 🤔 but I also understand why she acted the way she did. I felt really bad for her and I’m intrigued to see more about her. I enjoyed reading about her friendship with Elias but it was also difficult as they are in a place that really tests the limit to any relationships. The twists in this book were painful and there was a lot of turns that I didn’t expect.

The only thing I was a little unsure of was that was two love triangles in this book. It’s more just a personal preference and not an issue with the story though. The book ended in a way I honestly hadn’t even considered so one twist in particular came as a very big shock! I am very excited to keep reading this series, it has great potential to become a new favourite! 👀
