4.5 - I’m excited to see what the rest of this series brings, which I think is a trademark of a good first book. I also enjoyed the audiobook’s narration, for those considering that format.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The paranormal aspect of this novel is the only thing that threw me off, it didn’t really feel like it fit with the storyline.

I actually really loved the main characters and their development through the novel, excited to see where this journey takes them.

An extremely fast paced YA novel with one of the most violent and intense worlds I have yet to read about?? These characters go through hell, and it’s really engaging to see them strategize and fight against their oppressors. (Also genuinely stressful.)
I will say that even though I was rooting for them, I didn’t find the characters nor the romance the most compelling, so it’s a good thing I don’t read for the romance. It’s not significant, but there is just some lack of care there, where it doesn’t feel like they are real and like at the end of the day I am just simply reading a story rather than being fully immersed. There is a genuine possibility that this might be because it is YA and the style of the book obviously felt like it was written very YA even with the harsh topics that it dealt with, however I have still read YA novels with romances and characters I find more engaging. I think it all happened too fast, the subplot with Laia and Elias plus the development of their characters, but I suppose that also fits with the fast-paced nature of the whole book.
Definitely still readable and not much to complain about, however I hope that the increase in romance that I assume will happen in the upcoming books of the series doesn’t dim my enjoyment too much! Despite my complaints, I did eat this up. The high stakes, action, suspense; all made out for this to be an overall awesome reading experience.

Great fantasy fiction! Didn't change my life which is why it didn't get five stars but very enjoyable fiction along the lines of Jim Butcher's Alera series (a bit more adult thematically) and Marissa Meyer's Lunet chronicles and Tamora Pierce's Beka Cooper serie. Sexuality: kissing only, Bad language: none, Violence: lots but mostly in war and battle type scenes.
