I was ready to give up on Ann Patchett after Tom Lake and the Dutch House. Bel Canto was quite different, and I’m glad to have read it. 5 stars for beautiful writing, 3 stars for political portrayal. A solid 4 from me.

Inspired by a real event the book explores those involved in a long hostage situation as they all, both captors and hostages, adapt to life together. The musical references and the two intertwining love stories add emotional heft to the the plot.

A beautifully written story about an eclectic group of people who find beauty in their captivity. I am so upset at the ending even though I knew it was inevitable.
