I really don't know what to make of this one! The characters are intensely unlikeable on purpose, which isn't my sort of thing usually, however I was pretty gripped throughout. That said, I felt like the magic system and the power of each character was told to me, rather than shown, which was frustrating.

I wanted to come back to this book to review because why not and maybe I will do more reviews like this, probably not though.

The characters are all pretentious assholes, there I said it, but they all have their flaws and things that make you like them a little bit at least.

Though I did expect everyone to kiss in this book or be a thing, I was like these two should date, not these two. but whoever gets with who I am just having a good time that is for sure.

I resonated with Libby more than I thought I would, but her anxiety really came through and her just asking all the questions to be absolutely sure of something, that is me all over.

The only character that I ever had trouble liking out of the main 6 was Callum and I am hoping for that to change in the second book because there is definitely more to him than we get to see. But if not oh well I will continue to root for the others over him. no biggie.

Give me fantasy elements, dark academia and asshole characters that have to interact, and I am probably gonna have a great time!! I am excited to see where this series will take us too next

The Alexandrian Society protect and preserve knowledge from the greatest civilisations of antiquity and is a secret society consisting of the worlds best magicians. Each decade Atlas Blake chooses six candidates to be considered for initiation. After one year one will be eliminated, the others will receive unimaginable power, wealth and prestige.

This is like "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt, but with magic! It's fascinating, psychological tense and intricate! I have to admit that I don't understand how all magic work, it's more complex than flailing a wand or rattle off spells, but it's what makes it so fascinating. The characters are also complex, and it's interesting to see how they interact with each other.

Libby Rhodes and Nico de Varona dislike each other, but their magical ability to control every element of physicality improve when they work together. Reina Mori is a naturalist who can communicate with all living plants, and Parisa Kamali is an apt telepath. Callum Nova is an empath who can manipulate others emotions and thoughts into doing exactly what he wants. Tristan Caine can see through illusions, an ability so rare that nobody really knows what that entails. It's not surprising that the six of them don't trust each other, and the threat of elimination doesn't make it easier. Pacts are formed, dissolved, and renewed. Secrets are revealed and the tension intensifies. When the book ends I'm eager to know how this will continue!

Very interesting read. I wish they made more clear lines on the romance between characters, I’m very confused.

Despite the fact that Blake's writing style lends itself to an occassionally frustrating slowness, the story was definitely intriguing enough to keep me reading. The magic and its parameters are fascinating to read about, and the way the cast of characters is set up is endlessly interesting; to watch them interact is sometimes like watching a train derailing, but that's definitely part of the fun. I also have a few opinions on who should end up with who, but I wouldn't be mad about any outcome — especially considering how much the practice of shipping depends on what comes next.
