No one is more surprised than me how much I loved this.
The magic is vague, which I was totally fine with. But the plot is also very vague, and I didn't care. And the characters are also vague most of the time. What they think, what their intentions are. And some of them are truly annoying. But I still loved all of them in the end, even the one's that I disliked?
I just really really enjoyed the character dynamics and their interactions. It was just a lot of fun. And it was enough to make me fly through the book. I couldn't put it down. The narrative structure, the dialogues, all the vague mysteries made the pacing work really well for me.
I have to say that I read the e-book while listening to the audiobook, and I think the narrators are fantastic. I very much enjoyed listening to the different point of views, and it was easier to ignore some of the more pretentious lines and dialogues this way.
I'm happy I don't need to wait for the sequel all too long now.

I wanted this to be a five star and it was so close but the ending was a little anticlimactic compared to its lead up. This does not change the fact that this book was amazing. The characters aren’t loveable. But that’s what makes them real. They have depth and flaws and hopes and fears. The author was incredible with making them intellectually similar but personally different. The writing was also beautiful and interesting.

A dark academia murder game that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.

You know a book is written well when you can both admire and loathe the characters within. There were some areas that were a little trudgy to get through but overall the high stakes pace of the story held throughout.

I cannot wait to see how this ends.

3.25 (Originally rated at 4, lowered to 3.25 11/9/22).  I’m reeling, I loved this and was stressed the entire time I was reading. A lot was said, but at the same time I feel like the author didn’t say anything. I quite enjoyed it, but I don’t find that any of the great theses I was expecting were made or came true. All the characters seemed a lot more self important than perhaps they have a right to be, but knowing that while I was reading and accepting that as their traits made the experience fun and interesting.

It was good, I just wouldn’t read it again or recommend it to anyone. It wasn’t plot driven because there’s no plot, and it wasn’t character driven because only 1/6 characters develops. However, I was able to finish it and it wasn’t the worst book I read… I think it just got overhyped. Like many series, I think the second book will be better because the author has gotten some reviews and can actually get out of the exposition. This plot read like the entire book was exposition and the very last 20 pages were the inciting incident. This book never got to the rising action and the “climax,” missed the mark for me.
