Not quite as gripping as his last book, which I loved. I think this is largely because it reads more like a list that's not really interconnected. Maybe something like an index would've been better?
I would have given this book a full 5 stars, being an amateur vexillologist, but I couldn't. I started out feeling fully engaged but found the book to start to feel too "listy" and just rattling off tidbits of well-known flags. Eventually it felt like I was just reading Wikipedia captions for flags and their symbolism/history. I stopped reading because I found myself being overly familiar with the flags' descriptions.
I'd recommend this book to someone who doesn't know much about flags and is interested in them; however, if you are a flag aficionado, you might just want to skim the table of contents and read a couple of paragraphs while looking at this book in the bookstore or library.

2.5
Incredibly unfocused, some really bland takes, very much a liberalâ„¢ text and it even begins a chapter with a Rowling quote.
I'd probably be upset if I had payed for this

I really enjoyed this book and really gave a new perspective of how important religion is when it comes to National Identity - this is particularly clear in the 'Flags Of Fear' chapter.
An informed and well researched book that gives real insight in the significance of flags around the world that displays the humour of the author well. If you like writers such as Bill Bryson you'll like this.

Enjoyed this one but for whatever reason was less captivated than by 'Prisoners of Geography'. Definitely will continue to read Marshall's work

The book starts very strong and in the first chapters you learn so many fun facts but then as the focus shifts to smaller countries there is just way too much information to digest and it is not as much about flags as it is about countries and international relations, which was a shame. But overall very informative and gave me a new perspective to look at flags and what they mean for people of different nations.
