4.5 stars, rounded up for that ending.

I think this might have been the best, most satisfying ending I've read in a while. I had a couple of issues with the way the story was laid out, but the ending just made up for everything.

My issues were a bit of confusion, with how the story went back and forth between the journal entries and the present, a few times where dialogue broke off for plot descriptives that went so long I forgot what they were talking about, and a line about MC Michael being in love with someone, that never went anywhere.

The main story was about Michael's grandfather, a gay actor who disappeared, and a grandmother who'd been lying to him and his father for their entire lives. This story is told mostly through journal entries, written by Richard, Michael's real grandfather, and they were simply heartbreaking. Sweet and passionate, but in the end, heartbreaking.

But again, the ending made EVERYTHING worthwhile for me, and I'd read the whole story again, just for that alone.

I didn’t realize the young man looking for clues to his ancestor’s history was only 17, which gave the book a YA feel (nothing wrong with that, just not what I was expecting). Also, the diary entries for the rising star in the 50’s just really don’t ring true at all, so I’m going to give this one a miss.

I keep adoring this story as much as in its first version.

The extended version only minimally fleshes out the years after Richard's disappearance. I won't give this a separate rating.

Wow. Wow. And again, Wow. This story was absolutely amazing. I loved the concept of finding out your past while feeling like I was watching Richard and Manny through the diary entries. I found myself on the edge of my seat in tears hoping for the ending to be what I wanted it to be. It was captivating, beautiful, breathtaking and an overall great story.

Gorgeous story within a story. Some of the journal entries were heartbreaking. Okay so I guessed how (and who) it was going end, because that's the way I would have written it.
