Fantasy has been my overwhelming first choice of genre since I picked up Anne McCaffrey's Dragonflight in 1979 at the age of 10. After 40 years of reading Fantasy, at times I feel that I've read every possible story there is to be told and rarely do I have the opportunity to lose myself in something original. Ink and Bone grabbed my interest reading the summary and the book did not disappoint. Although this series is listed as YA+, I found it entirely appealing and difficult to put down. It was wonderful to lose myself in a story where I didn't know what would happen next. I'm looking forward to continuing the series, there is still a lot of story to be told.

Dropping this at 14%. My biggest problem with it is how unemotional it is throughout but especially in terms of the protagonist's relationship with his family. There are so many dynamics at play there, but the author gives us zero emotional response to the relationships and behaviors. This is just one example of the two-dimensional emptiness in this narrative. While the premise is extremely interesting, the execution fails.

Very entertaining book! It is sometimes you can see the parallels to Harry Potter and I would occasionally could we not be a bit more original? But as the story progressed it became less and less Harry Potterish (I LOVE Harry Potter but I want new books to NOT be a remake of Harry Potter). I will definitely be reading the next book.

somewhere between three and four. the beginning really dragged and I wasn't invested until almost halfway but then the rest flew by

update: i settled on three. which maybe because i felt a slight book slump due to it.

Terrible book but the sexual tension between two of the characters was insane.
I thought I was being queerbaited. Giggled like a little bitch when they turned out to be canon.

The gays were slaying, as usual. They brought the evil and the genius and the chaos and the cynicism and the glory and the fun and the snark and the banter.

The straights were horrifying. One guy
let a girl get sold as a sex slave so he could get his dick wet for five minutes
. How am I supposed to condone this?

(From the perspective of a WOC, I'd like to add that the cast was not diverse. Yeah, there was an Irish lass and an Arab girl and a Spanish lad and a German guy and, um, other people I'm sure. They were an embarrassment. The stereotypes were real. I cringed.)

Entertaining enough for a snowy day. Not memorable enough to mark as a favorite. Might get to the second book eventually, but it didn’t leave me with a burning desire to dive into it.

It was definitely a bit slow at times but the story in itself was a good one. I see where the comparison to Harry Potter comes from but it's a subtle one. The comparison to Farenheight 451 is obvious... books and everything, go figure. I definitely look forward to seeing where the rest of this series goes with character development and how it all ends.
