(Reading Neruda on Valentine's Day? Groundbreaking.)

He wrote not only about the happy kind of love, but also the sad kind. But he wrote every poem in this collection with heart-rending emotions and beautiful words. It's divine.

emotional fast-paced

I've never read something so magical

First impression: wow these are really bad!
I do plan to re-read each poem again and try to interpret each verse, but first read was disappointing and I found the poems to be juvenile and with very poor word choice. There was only one poem out of 20 + one song of despair that I enjoyed.

good but i feel as if much of the beauty and meaning of the poems is lost in translation. favorite poem was probably poem XX, “Tonight I Can Write”

era la sed y el hambre y tu fuiste la fruta

“Por qué se me vendrá todo el amor de golpe
cuando me siento triste, y te siento lejana?”

he’s definitely into oceans, ports, stars, and pines. really wrung imagery out of those

overall vibed more with the latter poems in this collection. the first half or so (in english) felt clunky and overwrought to me. might just be the translation, because even with my rusty and incomplete spanish, the originals flowed great and actually felt like love poems. would love to brush up on my spanish and revisit

No me ha parecido romántico.

Algunos versos me han parecido bonitos (pocos), otros no los he entendido y otros muchos los he entendido y me han dado asco.

Este tío estaba enfermo y es posible que su poesía sea grandiosa, pero como no tengo ni idea de poesía, no seré yo quien lo aprecie
