I’ve been writing all my reviews on Fable lately so add me on there if you want to see!

r0b3rta's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 11%

Lost interest, so I skimmed the book.

An incredibly engaging book in terms of Mary Roach’s witty writing and storytelling which I didn’t think was possible for a book about the human gastrointestinal tract. Even though Roach did preface that this book is not a “practical health book”, I still wished that more detail and information was revealed about a lot of the ‘why’ moments throughout the book - what are the exact genetic factors that influence a person developing a megacolon?; tell me more about olfaction and how taste is perceived rather than just anecdotes of professional tasters (this was still interesting to read nonetheless). I do acknowledge that at the time this novel was written, there might have been a lack of meta-analyses and other types of appropriate research studies that explore the benefits of faecal transplants or maybe the development of megacolons. Either way, it still felt like that something was missing from this book and for me, it might have been the lack of in-depth explanations of the phenomena associated with the human GIT. Another user has already commented this, but some of the jokes were outdated and too offbeat (without the charm) for me. I do respect Roach’s intention of normalising the ugly and gross occurrences in the human GIT, and I think she does a sound job at it.

Very useful book. Author takes you to a journey in time of alimentary canal.

Roach does it again, takes a fairly mundane topic and has me snorting with laughter!

Some parts were interesting and overall I did still like the casual, sometimes humorous tone, but just could not get into this one or bring myself to care about the topics. I absolutely loved Stiff by Roach when I read it years ago, so had high hopes for this book, but the content and focus just did not compel me. Okay, but wouldn't really recommend to others.

I'm a big fan of other Mary Roach books, but not this one. Maybe it's a rejection of my own grumpiness, but this book never grabbed me
