I picked this up to give to a friend who is an orchid grower and fancier. But I couldn't resist reading it myself - and I'm glad I did. Fascinating stuff, an easy read, and a very enjoyable one at that. You don't have to be a science person or an orchid lover to read this book. Although I did shake my head many times at the nearsightedness of some departmental folk, but having worked in the science field I can't say I was all that surprised at some of the stories

This book is kind of scary in that it reminds the reader than anywhere there are people seeking renown or money there is corruption. I wish there were a way to see if any of the expolsive charges Hansen levels (in a magnificently even-handed way) have been answered. From what I can find on the internet I'm not alone in that.

The sections were too disperate and repetitive at the same time. The author maintained a tone of judges outsider throughout the book which is not my cup of tea

As someone with a lifelong interest and experience in raising orchids, I enjoyed this book. From a horticultural standpoint, it holds up. The anecdotes were entertaining, though I have a feeling a few were over-embellished.

All in all, enjoyable.

A tale of love, lust, and obsession. Excellent analysis of the world of orchid collecting and showing. Very interesting read.

Eric Hansen’s observations of orchid fever are insightful and hilarious. The book is entertaining, a very easy read. Also appreciated the examination of botany imperialism by Kew Gardens.
