Did I hate this book? No. Hate is a strong word. Was there anything I liked about this book? Also no
The rules of the mating make no sense. Supposedly “sharing your essence” means you auto-know everything about your mate but there’s plenty of “I didn’t know that, why didn’t you tell me?” moments. Do you know things or don’t you?
I also didn’t care for any of the characters. FMC needed to remember Google existed sooner. MMC was… Not a cinnamon roll. He was a selfish liar wrapped in pretending to be a cinnamon roll. He touts being respectful and only is to a degree. FMC tells him repeatedly not to call her “my mate”, he says he will stop, and he doesn’t. He knew forcing a kiss on FMC would piss her off and he did it anyway. He knew the consequences of sharing his essence and didn’t tell FMC until she was suffering through it. He doesn’t f**k her without permission but that seems like the bare minimum?
Also, I generally don’t mind a more casual tone but the prose was downright juvenile and there were several points where sentences weren’t put together well. My favorite was “his tone turning reverential tone”. I had to zone out for several minutes before I could keep reading after that one. Lots of things were repeated unnecessarily. Like, one paragraph would just be a rephrasing of the preceding paragraph
The plot was blah. Everything took place over a week and I get that “mating bonds” help these sorts of things go faster but the pair didn’t really bond much. I would’ve liked to see, you know, courting. Get to know each other. Especially since there wasn’t a lot of smut
No interest in reading any more of these

A fun monster romance. I did feel it was missing something for me, not sure what though. I’m looking forward to reading more of Spade’s work.

Before I get to the rest of the review, this book is less steamy than the others and is a cute intro into the world of Sombra demons finding their human mates. Later books in the series have more sexy scenes but this one is not devoid of sex.
A fun romp for the monster lovers out there. The story is quick, the couple is cute, but there's plenty of miscommunication to go around for Shannon and Malphus. It's exactly what you'd expect and there is nothing wrong with that.
